CMT Montreal

CMT Montreal is in the books with the Team Alpha Q composed of Louis Boileau, Mauro Bongiovanni and Maxime Choquette taking down the tournament.

Many pretournament predictions had the attendance set at 15 to a maximum of 20 teams but Canadians sought to prove that the teams format was still greatly enjoyed and Wizards should seriously consider bringing it back, as the tournament contained 46 teams or 138 total players greatly smashing expectations. After seven rounds of Swiss play there was a cut to top 4 where Team Alpha Q first faced Team 2 Pro, 1 Con in the Semis and ultimately beat Team Grin and Bear It in the finals, who had just before defeated Team Last Year’s Tech. The tournament was a team event with one player on Standard, one on Modern and one on Legacy and many people were anxious to test out some interesting concoctions for the Modern format with a wide variety of decks on display.

This is Part 1 of the event coverage with Part 2 coming a little later in the week and including decklists for the top 8 as well as pictures, complete feature match questionaires and a break down of the metagame that was present. Enjoy.

Upon final consultation, the ruling was that cards from the sideboard were accidently placed on top of the deck, which is a decklist violation, and that the ruling was a game loss, unfortunately resulting in a match loss which would give Mauro the win and his team the match win improving to 6 – 0 for the event.

Kyle wins the die roll and chooses to play first with both players staying at seven. Kyle has a second turn [card]Champion of the Parish[/card] which Zack answers with a [card]Grand Abolisher[/card]. Kyle has a second Champion on the third turn giving his first champion a counter which trades with the Abolisher. Zack plays a [card]Mirran Crusader[/card] which he immediately puts in the graveyard expecting a counter put Kyle allows it to resolve only to reveal the reason why next turn with a [card]Fiend Hunter[/card] to remove the Crusader and a [card]Doomed Traveler[/card] which gives the champion two counters and swings to hit for three. Zack answers with a Hunter of his own to remove Kyle’s hunter and regain the crusader. On his turn Zack has a Champion of his own which is pumped right away by a second [card]Fiend Hunter[/card] for the Hero. Kyle plays another Hero which meets an [card]Oblivion Ring[/card] from Zack. However he is able to follow up the loss with another [card]Fiend Hunter[/card] removing Zack’s [card]Fiend Hunter[/card] gaining a second one to remove Zack’s second [card]Fiend Hunter[/card] and gain back his Hero. Zack only has a Geist on his turn which is soon legend-ruled by Kyle’s own Geist followed by Kyle attacking with the Hero and Traveller while adding [card]Gideon’s Lawkeeper[/card] after combat. For his turn Zack draws and scoops up his cards heading to game two.

Zack Spence 0 – 1 Kyle Duncan

For his third turn Zack adds a Geist. Kyle plays a timely reinforcements for full value and attacks with his Champion which Zack contemplates for a little before deciding to block with his bigger Geist realising the Champion is only a 2/2. On his next turn Zack swings with the Geist and then adds a [card]Doomed Traveler[/card]. Evan Berry 2 – 0 Sammy T

Jonathan Bentley 2 – 0 Dan J. MacDonald

Before attacks, Kyle adds a [card]Grand Abolisher[/card] to the board which Zack answers by tapping one of the Travellers. On his turn Zack plays a full value [card]Timely Reinforcements[/card]. Kyle has an [card]Honor of the Pure[/card] pumping his team and opting to swing with the team. He takes 16 as he chooses to block two tokens which brings him to 1 instead of killing the Hero which would of ended the game. For his turn Kyle has a full value [card]Timely Reinforcements[/card] even though he’s pretty sure that Zack has more than enough damage which proves to be the case as Zack’s next attack proves to be lethal.

Zack Spence 2 – 1 Kyle Duncan

Round #3

Team Last Year’s Tech (Ben Moir/Felix Tse/Jonathan Smithers)

VS.

Team M.L.B. (Jay Elarar/Noah Long/Daniel Lanthier)

Round 3 is featuring Legacy with Ben Moir piloting StoneBlade against Dan Lantheir piloting StoneBlade. Ben won the die roll and chooses to keep at seven where as Dan ships his hand back for a better six. Both players start on two lands with Ben having a Tundra and [card]Moorland Haunt[/card] and Dan with an Island and a [card]Flooded Strand[/card]. Ben cant find a third land and ends his turn by discarding a [card]Force of Will[/card]. Dan similarly stuck discards a [card]Swords to Plowshares[/card]. Ben is able to find a third land but still no action where as Dan is still stuck this time discarding a [card]Jace, the Mind Sculptor[/card]. Similar to last turn both players take the same action but this time Dan discards [card]Swords to Plowshares[/card]. For his fifth land Ben finds a [card]Wasteland[/card] which forces Dan to find a Plains with the Strand which coupled with the [card]Wasteland[/card] he drew plays [card]Stoneforge Mystic[/card] finding a [card]Batterskull[/card]. Ben cracks on of his [card]Flooded Strand[/card]s to play a [card]Vendilion Clique[/card] which resolves revealing two [card]Force of Will[/card]s, two [card]Spell Snare[/card]s, a Big Jace, a [card]Spell Pierce[/card] and the recently acquired [card]Batterskull[/card]. Ben chooses to ship the [card]Batterskull[/card] to the bottom which draws Dan a second [card]Stoneforge Mystic[/card] (The powers of doing coverage!). For his turn Ben swings in with the Clique for three and casts a [card]Phantasmal Image[/card] which is met with one of Dan’s two [card]Spell Snare[/card]s. To cut Dan down on mana Ben trades his [card]Wasteland[/card] for Dan’s. Dan rips a [card]Polluted Delta[/card] which finds an Island and allows him to land his second Mystic which Ben tries to [card]Spell Snare[/card] only for Dan to [card]Spell Pierce[/card] it and to then Force the second [card]Spell Snare[/card] Ben has. Once again he finds a [card]Batterskull[/card] before shipping back the turn. Once again Ben attacks with a Clique getting Dan down to 10 and tries for a Jace which is met by a [card]Force of Will[/card] from Dan leaving him with only the [card]Batterskull[/card] in hand. Dan cracks in with one of the Mystics before passing back the turn. Ben finds a [card]Riptide[/card] Labo for his turn before attacking with the Clique knocking Dan down to 6. He then tries for the Swords on Stoneforge which Dan contemplates for a bit before allowing to resolve moving his life up to seven. Ben then tries for Big Jace which falls victim to a flashbacked [card]Spell Pierce[/card] thanks to [card]Snapcaster Mage[/card] which then cracks in the next turn for two. During his main phase Dan activates the Mystic to get his [card]Batterskull[/card] in play. Ben on his turn can only attack with the Mystic before passing back the turn. Dan attacks with both the Mage and the token with the Mage landing and the token gaining Dan four life while being removed. To keep the pressure Ben makes a [card]Moorland Haunt[/card] token and attacks with lethal on board next turn which Dan’s drawn [card]Sword of Feast and Famine[/card] can do nothing about.

Ben Moir 1- 0 Dan Lanthier

Felix Tse 0 – 1 Noah Long

Jonathan Smithers 0 – 1 Jay Elarar

For the second game both players keep at seven with Ben hoping for a better game than the last one. Dan opens with a [card]Flooded Strand[/card] which is immediately cracked for an Island to avoid a possible Stifle. Both player continue playing fetchlands before at the end of Ben’s second turn Dan plays a [card]Brainstorm[/card] and then shuffles the top cards away thanks to a [card]Misty Rainforest[/card]. On his third turn Ben cracks two of his fetches to find a Plains and Island which results in a Stoneforge meet with a [card]Spell Snare[/card] from Dan. The following turn Ben again tries for a [card]Stoneforge Mystic[/card] which is interrupted by Jay with a sideboard question before chooses let it resolve with Ben finding everybody’s favorite [card]Battering Ram[/card]. At end of turn Dan plays a [card]Vendilion Clique[/card] targetting Ben revealing a Jace, Image, Mage, 2 [card]Spell Snare[/card]s, a Swords and the recently fetched Equipment. With Ben short on land, Dan chooses to let him keep his hand. In his main phase Dan [card]Brainstorm[/card]s. He finds a Swords targetting Ben’s Mystic with Ben countering with his own Swords at the Clique. Unfortunately for Ben, Dan has a [card]Spell Pierce[/card] allowing Dan to keep the Clique and attack for three on the next turn after Ben drew and passed. At end of turn, Ben goes for the [card]Snapcaster Mage[/card] which prompts Dan to discuss with Noah before allowing it to pass. The flashbacked Swords from Ben is met with a Mage from Dan and a flashbacked [card]Spell Pierce[/card]. Dan’s Clique is then removed with another Swords although the far more troubling Geist hits the board on Dan’s side. To stem the bleeding Ben draws a [card]Moorland Haunt[/card] which can begin making tokens and block the Mage. With Dan not wanting to lose his Geist he passes back the turn, with Ben adding a [card]Batterskull[/card] to the table. The next turn goes similar for Dan where as Ben this time adds a [card]Jace, the Mind Sculptor[/card] to the board while gaining four life off the attacking [card]Batterskull[/card]. For his turn Dan draws a Mystic which Ben attempts to [card]Spell Snare[/card] only to be met by Flustterstorm. He then tries a second [card]Spell Snare[/card] which gets the mystic but Dan has a second one in hand which resolves and finds him a [card]Sword of Feast and Famine[/card]. Looking for an answer Ben [card]Brainstorm[/card]s on his turn finding a Stoneforge and a Jitte which immediately gains counters from the [card]Batterskull[/card] attacks using the counters to kill Dan’s creatures and soon after earning the concession from Dan.

VS.

Team How Mad Are You? (Nicolas LeBlanc/Justin Richardson/Robert Anderson)

Round 2 is featuring Modern with Gareau piloting Angel’s Grace/Ad Nauseum Combo and Rob on U/W Tron. Rob adds an [card]Urza’s Tower[/card] to the board with Gareau adding a [card]Misty Rainforest[/card] and another [card]Sleight of Hand[/card]. Rob plays a Power Plant and passes the turn with Gareau fetching a tapped [card]Watery Grave[/card] off the Rainforest. He then adds a [card]Scalding Tarn[/card] and plays his third [card]Sleight of Hand[/card]. Rob tries for a a [card]Thirst for Knowledge[/card] which meets a [card]Condescend[/card] from Gareau. On his turn Rob draws the last land for Tron and plays [card]Wurmcoil Engine[/card] which meets a [card]Pact of Negation[/card] from Gareau who on upkeep removes two [card]Simian Spirit Guide[/card]s from his hand to avoid losing to his Pact. He adds a [card]Tolaria West[/card] to the board and passes. Rob transmutes his [card]Tolaria West[/card] and passes back the turn. Gareau adds a Calciform pools and Rob adds a second [card]Hallowed Fountain[/card]. At end of turn Gareau plays a [card]Telling Time[/card] and passes back the turn after charging the pool. Rob with add piece of Tron Hardcasts a Kozilek with his two Fountains. Sensing impending doom Gareau sees this as the turn to combo off and takes two from an untapped [card]Watery Grave[/card] and casts Ad Nauseum. He begins revealing cards and pauses when he reaches three life to comtemplate his options, he then continues to reveal but without the [card]Angel’s Grace[/card] being cast he is pretty much out of options and stays at 1 life. Rob attacks in with Kozilek next turn which is met with an [card]Angel’s Grace[/card] to stave off one turn but leading him to scoop up his cards on the next turn.

Kevin Anctil 0 – 1 Nicolas Leblanc

Rob finds a [card]Rule of Law[/card] and [card]Expedition Map[/card] which hit the bin and a [card]Mindslaver[/card] and [card]Tolaria West[/card] which go to his hand. For his turn Rob tries to go for the [card]Mindslaver[/card] which represents a potential loss for Gareau who plays a [card]Condescend[/card] for five which Rob can pay for but would also prevent him from using the [card]Mindslaver[/card] this turn. Rob instead allows the Slaver to be countered before passing the turn for Gareau to play a land and go. Rob this turn tries for a [card]Rule of Law[/card] off of his [card]Azorius Signet[/card], which meets a [card]Pact of Negation[/card] from Gareau. And both players continue to play land go with Rob joking that Gareau will never be able to produce more mana than him. The silence is finally broken with Rob playing a [card]Snapcaster Mage[/card] giving his Gifts Flashback to which Gareau responds with an [card]Angel’s Grace[/card] followed by an Ad Nauseum which Rob attempts to [card]Condescend[/card] for ten only for Gareau to play [card]Snapcaster Mage[/card] on his Pact to counter the [card]Condescend[/card] only for Rob to follow that up with a Surprise [card]Mindbreak Trap[/card] on his Ad Nauseum leading to some laughes around the table as the trap was completely unexpected. With all said an done the Gifts resolves with Rob losing an [card]Expedition Map[/card] and a second [card]Mindslaver[/card] and gaining a Kozilek and [card]Rule of Law[/card], both of which are cast this turn with both players trading Mages. On upkeep Gareau admits there is no outs that would allow him to win so he draws his card for the turn with Rob then reminding him that he loses to his Pact before losing to his concession.

He then adds another island and a [card]Phantasmal Bear[/card] with Francois playing [card]Think Twice[/card] at end of turn looking for a third land which he fails to find and passes back the turn. Curious, KYT plays a [Card]Gitaxian Probe[/Card] revealing a [Card]Mana Leak[/Card], [Card]Snapcaster[/Card], [Card]Galvanic Blast[/Card], Black Sun, [Card]Think Twice[/Card] and [Card]Doom Blade[/Card]. KYT adds a third Island and swings with the Bear which dies to the [card]Doom Blade[/card]. After some consulting with Alex over two plays with them agreeing on the second course which is a [card]Snapcaster Mage[/card] giving the Ponder flashback and having KYT flashing back the Ponder. For his turn Francois finds a [card]Sulfur Vent[/card]s which enters tapped and he passes back the turn taking two from the Snapcaster and KYT landing a Delver. FX end of turns a Think twice which finds him an Island adding to the board to give him four lands. At upkeep the Delver reveals a [card]Dissipate[/card] and KYT swings with both creatures. In response The [card]Abomination[/card] meets a Galvanic blast and KYT contemplating the counter but knowing that Black Sun in FX’s hand wrecks his board. FX flashes back [card]Think Twice[/card] but he cant find another land. KYt tried attacking with the Mage but FX had another [card]Galvanic Blast[/card] killing the mage. He then passes the turn with FX finding another land and passing it back. Looking for information on a clear board KYT casts [card]Gitaxian Probe[/card] revealing a drawn [card]Arc Trail[/card], Olivia and [card]Snapcaster Mage[/card] to go with the Mage and Zenith still in hand. Both players proceed to play land go for another two turns before FX finds a Stansia Bloodhall which slowly begins to bleed KYT’s life at end of turn. Both players have full hands with plenty of mana causing them to discard some Innistrad Legends instead of making plays with KYT discarding Geist and FX discarding Olivia. KYT adds a [card]Moorland Haunt[/card] to his board and plays a Sword which represents a significant lifeswing. FX on his turn plays a [card]Sorin’s Vengeance[/card] representing lethal with KYT attempting to [card]Dissipate[/card] it. Felix however has four lands required to play Snapcaster and flashback [card]Mana Leak[/card].

Francois Xavier Morin 1 – 1 Kar Yung Tom

Jake Meszaros 1 – 1 Alexander Hayne

Vasil Maystorov 0 – 2 Pascal Maynard

KYT having lost chooses to play first in the deciding game with a little bit of pressure being lifted by Pascal having won his match meaning Alex or KYT had to win only one of the their third games to win this team match. KYT chooses to mull to six with FX staying at seven. KYT leads with an island into Ponder choosing not to shuffle and passing the turn with FX leading with [card]Darkslick Shores[/card] and shipping it back. KYT on turn two finds his white source with [card]Glacial Fortress[/card] into [card]Merfolk Looter[/card] drawing a puzzled look from Fx who plays a [card]Blackcleave Cliffs[/card] and Go For The Throats it right away. KYT adds a [card]Moorland Haunt[/card] for his third turn and plays a Ponder choosing again to leave the cards on top. FX pays two life at end of turn to Extraction the Looter which resolves revealing a hand of counterspells from KYT and only one other Looter in the deck but providing valuable information. He then adds another Shores and passes the turn to KYT who plays a Ponder and has a quick discussion with Pascal on what the correct play is. After discussion he chooses to shuffle the deck. He still doesn’t find a third land and passes back the turn. FX plays a fourth land and passes with Pascal interrupting KYT before he untaps to make sure he plays the Snapcaster in his hand even without the possibility of Flashback. KYT then swings for two but remains stuck on three lands. FX tries the Black Sun for 1 with KYT playing [card]Vapor Snag[/card] choosing to save his creature. he then replays the Snapcaster at end of turn passing the turn back with three lands untapped but still short compared to FX’s board. FX casts Olivia which meets a [card]Dissipate[/card] from KYT which is allowed to resolved which FX countering with a Snapcaster giving the Surgical flashback to remove the [card]Dissipate[/card]s by paying two life and revealing a [card]Mana Leak[/card], [card]Mentor of the Meek[/card] and a [card]Midnight Haunting[/card]. KYT attacks with his Mage which FX is content trading with his. He finds a fourth land and goes for the [card]Midnight Haunting[/card] at end of FX’s turn which is allowed to resolve. He then swings with the two tokens bringing FX down to ten and following it up with his fourth Ponder. KYT plays a [card]Gitaxian Probe[/card] for two life revealing Chandra the Firebrand, [card]Galvanic Blast[/card] and [card]Black Sun’s Zenith[/card]. FX tries for the Chandra on his turn which is allowed to resolved and burns on of KYT’s tokens. At end of turn KYT uses his [card]Moorland Haunt[/card] to produce another token and he then adds a Sword to the board. On his turn FX plays a Black Sun for one removing both tokens and dealing one damage to KYT with Chandra. On his turn KYT plays a [card]Mentor of the Meek[/card] and then a [card]Phantasmal Bear[/card] with the Mentor dying to Glavanic Blast. The Firebrand then kills the Bear again clearing the board. KYT once again lands a [card]Mentor of the Meek[/card] and equipping which resolves and FX flashesback [card]Think Twice[/card] at end of turn. FX has another Zenith this time for four which removes the Mentor and with the Firebrand dealing KYT one. During his turn KYT makes a token and tries to equip which is meet by a [card]Gut Shot[/card] from FX before he plays out a [card]Batterskull[/card] on his turn which combined with the Firebrand represents potentially lethal damage. KYT land a Delver on his turn and equips with three lands up. FX attacks with the [card]Batterskull[/card]. KYT makes a token which dies to a [card]Galvanic Blast[/card] and not wanting to lose the Delver he allows it to pass. The Delver does not transform and KYT cracks into the Firebrand with the Delver hoping to play for the draw being up a game. FX on his last turn stares down the board being unable to win the match this turn in the fourth turn of time and instead offers the handshake for the tie.

Francois Xavier Morin 1 – 1 – 1 Kar Yung Tom

Jake Meszaros 1 – 1 – 1 Alexander Hayne

Vasil Maystorov 0 – 2 Pascal Maynard
