The Eh Team #292 – Blood Besties

Matt got married! Modern season is a great time to return to Magic… particularly if you love Blood Moon! What kind of tweaks Matt and his ‘Blood Bestie’ Mike have made to the RG Ponza deck. Playing it at a Modern PPTQ, right into the finals! Matt can’t come back without another listener contest. Listen in to play! Getting inspired and using that to strip away distraction.

I should also mention that the new Jund Suicide Zoo list is a little stronger against Ponza simply because it’s less weak to Sudden Shock. Shock is very good against the Steppe Lynx version because your large creatures require triggers and pump spells to be large. Shock interacts favorably with Swiftspear, Lynx, and Mutagenic Growth/pump spells and less so with Gnarlwood Dryad. It’s still not easy, but Ponza is a bit stronger against the 5-Color version.

Wrapter’s deck is also more red, and probably becomes moreso post board as I imagine he brings in Reveler, Flame Slash, and possibly Grim Lavamancer. His maindeck Manamorphose help against Moon too.

Best mispronunciation I’ve heard is kitchen finks as fitchen kinks.

  • Cédrik LeBlanc

I heard someone mispronounce Mercadian Masques as Merssadian Maskwes. Hard to write down how he pronounced it but it sounded awful.

  • Andre Desjardins

I’m not sure if this counts as miss pronounching, or just horrible reading/things on the mind:

Well I am famous for misprnouncing cards the best one I’ve heard was from my Blair Murray-Clark who pronounched Deepwater Hypnotist as Deepthroat Hypnotist.

The best miss hearing I’ve ever heard was my Friend Blair, talking to me and my other frined Brad, when he said “… not only that the cards’ill last longer.” to which Brad replied: “Did you just call me a cardinal assmonger?!”

Ok my favorite of all time is a bit two fold..

Step one, I am playing a match and an opponent said “Izzet Staircaster”

Now yes this is a mistake and clearly he didn’t get the static of the name, but that isn’t what made it so funny to me.

The reason I died laughing is myself.

Step two – I miss heard what he said as “Izzet Stairmaster”

Instantly I pictured a Mage in red shorts and blue sweatbands pushing as hard as possible on a Stairmaster to lose that weight. I pictured the huge guys (guys with more than two toughness) intimidating him, and pushing him to be better. Small Son’s (the guys with 1 toughness) bow down to the Izzet Stairmaster as he slays them.

Miss pronounce to miss hear = my favorite of all time.

I have 3 great mispronunciations although 2 of them aren’t exactly card names but they are from the same person that frequents my FNMs. For whatever reason this kid can’t say the words vigilance or geist. He pronounces them VILIJENCE and GEEST. I correct the dude every time he says one of them wrong but he just can’t get them right ever.

A while back when I use to FNM at another store we did have a guy with a slight lisp and he couldn’t say the names of the Harbingers from Lorwyn correctly. He would say Kifkin Hawbwinger. It was all my friends and I could do not to just bust out laughing each time and we definitely laughed about it when he wasn’t around. Totally not his fault but still hilarious.
