First Strike #5 – From Standard Bannings to Tezzeret the Schemer

First Strike is a Magic: The Gathering debate-style podcast that discusses competitive and social aspects of the game. In this episode, KYT moderates the debate topics between Toronto’s Grand Prix winner Robert Lombardi and special guest veteran streamer Vince D’Agostino (

  • (02:13) Current Standard, as bad as the pros say or better than they know?
  • (12:48) Should cards be banned quicker in Standard?
  • (25:35) FNM promos, what can WotC do to make them better?
  • (37:28) Are constructed formats too easily solved by the availability of decklist and tournament data?
  • (45:15) Tezzeret the Schemer, Oath of Ajani, from Aether Revolt: Good cards or not even exciting?
  • (57:34) Biggest MTGO-related pet peeve?

    Robert is great.

Mono black devotion was a GREAT format. I won 4 game days in a row. 😀

  • @Drew_2308

I think 1 deck being 25% of the metagame is a problem.

  • @Drew_2308

Rob, that’s bullshit, ask any modern player that plays consistently and they will tell you they don’t care if their collection drops 20% as long as more cards get printed and especially some of the stupidly expensive for no reason cards like Damnation, Grove of the Burnwillows, Liliana of the Veil… etc

  • KYT and crew FYI, I love the show. I’m a forever fan of the Eh Team (RIP <3) so, been listening to manadeprived content forever, gotta say that the Eh Team episodes where you bring a guest on were my favorites (even when Boosh goes dark). This cast is super similar to those episodes and I love it! All the talk is current and relevant. Love KYT in the role as interviewer. Pro opinions are all I want in my ear holes, passion, passion, passion! The whole show is banter, even when everyone agrees, keep em' coming, love it!

    • Thank you so much Mandrew! That was the goal of this cast and I think it fills a void missing in the podcast universe. My co-hosts are players that have found some level of success in higher level tournaments.
