Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Dominaria for the first time at our Sealed Dominaria Pre Release.
If you’re reading this, I assume you’re like me and are exhausted after a long weekend of Dominaria pre-release. This set is so sweet, and thanks to all of you out there, Face to Face Games Toronto sold out all of our events all weekend long.
Of course, that includes our Sunday Showdown. Which featured a whopping 69 players playing Dominaria Sealed.
A special congratulations goes out to Mike Ferneyhough who defeated Showdown stalwart Andrew Gordon in the finals to take down the top prize.
The rest of our Top 8 featured former Pro Tour champion David Rood, Ceilidh Trites, Bill Irons, Andrew Abela Lucas Worrell and Isaak Krut. If you follow the showdown series at all you’ll recognize many of these names. David Rood’s in particular, who told me in round one that he almost left after seeing how bad his pool was. Turns out, when you’re good enough to win a Pro Tour, you’re also good enough to Top 8 a showdown with a bad pool.
As for the format, I for one had a blast playing it all weekend long. The legendary synergies allow for long, drawn-out games where you really feel like your decision making and deckbuilding matters. That said, watch out for some of the equipment in the format, especially at rare, they pack some serious punch.
Below you can check out some photos from Sunday, as well as some of the top cards from the decks of out Top 4 competitors.
With his win on Sunday Mike qualifies himself for our next Face to Face Games Ultimate Showdown. Next week we’re hosting another Sealed Sunday Showdown event featuring Dominaria! This time it will be a Sealed Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier. We hope to see you there!
