Showdown Recap: Legacy
Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week, players battled in Legacy for the second time in the last few weeks to see who would take home the top prize.
I’m certainly biased, but I think it’s time we just call it—4C Leovold is public enemy number one in Legacy. There were three copies in the Top 8 of this event and Daniel Fournier came ninth only losing to the mirror all day. Edgar Magalhaes has been working on the deck since before GP Vegas and is someone who helped me get to a good place with my list and had yet another good day on Sunday. Legacy is a complex battleground but if you’re looking to win in this format 4C Leovold better be on your radar.
Alex Craig was the winner of this event with Jeskai Stoneblade, and he and the rest of the Top 4 (Eldrazi, Lands and B/R Reanimator) definitely had 4C in mind when deciding on decks for the event. Three of these four decks are powerful, linear strategies that have their own ways of combatting Force of Will while punishing slow draws immensely. Lands, in particular can pray on 4C if they can’t stick a Deathrite Shaman. Alex’s deck isn’t as linear but instead tries to out-haymaker the Leovold deck, which apparently worked on Sunday.
October’s Eternal Weekend championships will likely be the key decider for what best combats these powerful control decks, but for now Toronto’s metagame is shaping up strongly heading into the Legacy Showdown over Nationals weekend on Oct. 14.
With his win this weekend Alex qualifies himself for the next Face to Face Games Ultimate Showdown and the rest of the Top 8 have started their march toward the top of the Showdown leaderboard. Join us this weekend to try to cement your spot on the leaderboard at our Ixalan Pre-Release Limited Showdown. That’s right, come out and get your first competitive look at some new cards next Sunday!
