Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week, players battled battled a day early, on Saturday, as we hosted a Last Chance Qualifier for Sunday’s Modern Regional Pro Tour Qualifier (RPTQ).
Affinity has got to be Modern’s version of ‘old faithful’ and David Hall rode the powerful artifact strategy all the way to an invite to the RPTQ on Saturday. As I find myself saying a lot, this Top 8 looks extremely “Modern” in that it’s a bunch of different individually powerful decks but no prevailing theme seems to exist at a cursory glance. With that said, Path to Exile seemed to at least have a little bit of success for the fair decks, and once again colourless was the unfair deck you wanted to be on.
Jamie Naylor jumped out of pseudo-retirement to play an Omar Beldon-influenced pile of U/W cards that Jamie certainly excels at winning with. There were also two, yes two, full copies of Goblin Rabblemaster in this Jund deck which just hits close to my heart. Decks aside I think it must be noted that Quinn Gregg has officially just never missed a Top 8 in Modern ever with Eldrazi Tron.
David will have a short turn-around time for his Sunday RPTQ but I’m sure he kept his Ornithopters close to his pillow that night to attempt to go back-to-back and appease our lord and saviour Drake “drizzy Drake” “The Six” God.
With his win on Saturday David has qualified himself for the next Face to Face Games Ultimate Showdown and the Modern RPTQ on Sunday, and the rest of the Top 8 have started their march toward the top of the Showdown leaderboard. Join us this weekend at Face to Face Games Toronto for where our Showdown series gets a special Iconic Masters Sealed event come on out and open a Mana Drain!
