Showdown Recap: Standard

Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week players battled in Standard to see who could Scarab God the best!

If you came here expecting anything other than a pile of Scarab Gods and some Hazorets than you’ll likely be pretty disappointed. With that said, we did have a diverse Top 8 filled with those cards.

Our Showdown Champion Andrew Abela.

Andrew Abela took down this event, defeating Massimo Gordillo in a 90 minute U/B Control in the finals. Both of these players have been tearing it up in the Showdown series as of late and have really proven themselves as serious contenders for the next Ultimate Showdown title.

The remainder of the Top 8 was filled with even more familiar faces. Ryan Sandrin, Lucas Worrell, Mik Tampold, Delan Hamasoor, Goku Balakrishnan and Jeff Swaluk are all repeat Showdown Top 8 competitors and are simply some of the most consistent players in the city.

As far as spice goes, Mik’s deck definitely takes the cake. This hybrid of midrange U/W cards and control elements does actually look pretty resilient against Scarab God decks. Jeff Swaluk also brought a little spice, forgoing the red splash in the U/B Midrange archetype for white. If you’re looking to learn more about the archetype, check out Daniel Fournier’s videos.

It’s clear what you want to be doing in this format in terms of the top-end of creatures in your deck. Hazoret and Scarab God are the pillars of Standard, but how to build around them is still unclear. I’m certainly excited to see how things develop.

With his win on Sunday Andrew moves himself up Face to Face Games Ultimate Showdown leaderboard. Next week we have a Team Trios Showdown! That’s right, team Magic! Grab a couple friends and get to testing because it’s going to be great.
