Welcome to another weekly Showdown Recap, where we take a look at what happened at Face to Face Games Toronto’s weekly Sunday Showdown, a series of 1k events feeding into the Ultimate Showdown 5k Invitational. This week battled in a post-ban Standard Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier (PPTQ) for Pro Tour Dominaria.
Standard is has been completely overhauled by bannings and let me be the first to tell you — it’s really fun. Early on the two pillars seem to be the resurgence of Mardu Vehicles in conjunction with Grixis Energy, yes there’s still energy decks.
That’s certainly represented in our Top 8, which sports two copies of Vehicles and three Grixis decks. Massimo Gordillo took down the whole thing with Mardu, a deck he’s been winning with since its inception.
What I think is different about this new version of Standard is that because the decks have had their power-levels nerfed a little, some of the more niche decks can go over-the-top of them. You can see that with these two unique Approach of the Second Sun decks and a U/W Gift deck in the Top 8.
These kinds of decks can pray on Grixis and set up a very healthy cyclical metagame. I for one, am refreshed by this new Standard world.
With his win on Sunday Massimo moves himself up Face to Face Games Ultimate Showdown leaderboard. Next week we have a Modern Showdown just in time for you to get your testing in for Grand Prix Toronto !
