Vengevine Jund with bolov0

[Today, we are pleased to introduce bolov0 to Mana Deprived readers.  Who exactly is bolov0?  As of this writing, bolov0 is currently 8th in the MTGO Player of the Year race.  His most recent achievement was to win the 2nd online PTQ with UW Control.  Other achievements include a Top 32 at Grand Prix Sao Paulo and a Top 16 at Grand Prix Buenos Aires.  In his first article with Mana Deprived, he will discuss his current favorite deck (Jund) and his sideboarding plan.  Enjoy!  –KYT]

Hello, my name is Thiago Saporito, mostly known as “bolov0” on Magic Online, and I will be writing some articles for Mana Deprived.  I will start off by talking a little about Constructed, specifically the Jund deck.  Jund is the most popular deck on Magic Online or at least it’s the one that has produced the most results.

When Rise of the Eldrazi came I was trying this version of Jund:

4 Putrid Leech
3 Siege-Gang Commander
3 Broodmate Dragon
4 Bloodbraid Elf
4 Sprouting Thrinax
2 Garruk Wildspeaker
2 Sarkhan The Mad
3 Maelstrom Pulse
4 Lightning Bolt
3 Terminate
4 Blightning
4 Savage Lands
4 Raging Revine
2 Lavaclaw Reaches
4 Verdant Catacombs
2 Dragonskull Summit
4 Forest
3 Swamp
3 Mountain
Sideboard :
4 Goblin Ruinblaster
3 Jund Charm
1 Maelstrom Pulse
3 Malakir Bloodwitch
2 Consuming Vapors
2 Doom Blade

But I realized a few things:
1 – Sarkhan the Mad is really bad
2 – I was losing to aggro decks
3 – Mirror match was getting very hard

After more testing, I revised the deck.  Here’s my updated list:

4 Putrid Leech
4 Goblin Ruinblaster
3 Vengevine
4 Bloodbraid Elf
4 Sprouting Thrinax
2 Broodmate Dragon
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Blightning
3 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Terminate
4 Savage Lands
4 Raging Revine
2 Lavaclaw Reaches
2 Dragonskull Summit
4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Forest
3 Swamp
3 Mountain

The main board is basic, but I am starting to play Goblin Ruinblaster.  It’s a mistake if you do not include this card in your Jund builds since it is very good in the mirror match and against Control decks. Vengevine is very good, against Mirror and Controls too, since if your opponent Blightnings you, you can discard it without a problem.  You will return this guy to the game soon and against Control decks you can play it with no fear of Day of Judgment.  The only response for this creature is Oblivion Ring, but you can Maelstrom Pulse that.  What about Path to Exile?  Well, that would probably help you since your opponent is probably also playing Spreading Seas.

You might ask ” Why the hell he is not playing Siege-Gang Commander?”, but I realized that it was not better than the cards I am currently playing.  If you are playing a nationals qualifier and you know the most played decks will be Jund, I suggest you play my main board.

The sideboard is really focused on aggro decks:
4 Doom Blade
3 Malakir Bloodwitch
2 Consuming Vapors
2 Jund Charm
2 Duress
2 Slave of Bolas

For the mirror match and UW TapOut, you do not have many good cards in your sideboard, since you are already playing main board Goblin Ruinblaster and Vengevine, but you have a good sideboard against the another decks from the field.  You might think there’s too much removal in my sideboard, but against Mono Red, you really need many removals for the game to go in your favor.  Against Conscription Mythic, a lot of removal is needed because they have many guys that are big problems like Knight of the Reliquary, Baneslayer Angel and Sovereigns of the Lost Alara.

How I am sideboarding with Jund against the field decks:

Mirror Match:

-3 Maelstrom Pulse -1 Terminate

+2 Jund Charm +2 Slave of Bolas

UW TapOut (Or UWr planeswalker):

+2 Doom Blade +3 Malakir Bloodwitch +2 Duress

– 4 Lightning Bolt -2 Terminate – 1 Sprouting Thrinax

Naya Boss:

+3 Malakir Bloodwitch +4 Doom Blade +2 Jund Charm +2 Slave of Bolas

-4 Goblin Ruinblaster -3 Vengevine -4 Blightning

Conscription Mythic:

+2 Consuming Vapors +3 Malakir Bloodwitch +4 Doom Blade +2 Slave of Bolas

-4 Blightning -4 Goblin Ruinblaster -3 Vengevine

Mono Red:

+4 Doom Blade +2 Consuming Vapor +2 Jund Charm

-4 Goblin Ruinblaster -1 Vengevine -3 Maelstrom Pulse

So I hope you enjoyed this article and good luck in your PTQ/National Qualifiers!

Thanks for reading,

bolov0
